Lyon is the 3rd commune of France located in the south-eastern quarter of France, at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône. Its inhabitants are called Lyonnais.

The city has preserved an important architectural heritage ranging from Roman times to the 20th century, passing through the Renaissance and the districts of Vieux Lyon, the hill of Fourvière, the Presqu'île and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

It is particularly known for its manifestation of the Festival of Lights which takes place every December, during which the people of Lyon illuminate their windows with candles on the evening of December 8. The origins of this festival date back to the 19th century and are linked to the inauguration of the golden virgin placed at the top of the Saint-Thomas Fourvière's chapel.

Today, it has taken on a tourist dimension with the illumination of the city's monuments by professional technicians from all over the world for this occasion.
